Consent Week

Consent Awareness Week is a national effort that takes place between September 16th and September 20th. Consent is an essential component in cultivating healthy relationships and creating a campus culture of safety and respect. It is important to acknowledge that consent goes beyond intimate relationships and should be applied to all interactions with others. Tone and body language can be indicators of another individual’s feelings, but the best way to confirm consent… is to just ask!
A simple way to remember consent is to think of FRIES. Consent is Freely Given, consent is Reversible, consent is Informed, consent is Enthusiastic, and consent is Specific. Consenting to one act does not mean consent is automatically given foranother act, or at a later time. Consent can also not be forced, persuaded, or manipulated- it should be given genuinely and freely. If at any point you are unsure, it’s always a good idea to check-in and ask the other person as consent should never be assumed.
