FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Below are the most common questions regarding the services provided by, or supported by the Student Association. If you have any concerns that are not listed, please visit the Contact Us page to send your questions to us directly.

Clubs

  • The list of Clubs and all processes are done on the URSLC platform here:  List Of Groups (sl.on.ca)

  • Go to URSLC under the ‘Groups’ tab and select ‘Student Organizations’ and they will all be available to click and join.

  • You can request to start a new club on the URSLC groups page, and clicking the blue button ‘+ Register new Student Organization’.

  • You can host an event using the information provided in the Clubs Guidelines, and email saengage@sl.on.ca for help in planning and filling out student event forms.

  • Check out the club policy document located on the SA website to find out more about the policies, expectations, essential dates, funding, and more.

  • The Student Association has a Graphic Designer on staff who can take your vision and turn it into reality. You are able to work with her to create any graphics needed for your club (posters, social media posts, etc.) and her email is copycentre@sl.on.ca

  • Using personal connections is a great place to start looking for club members. Talk to friends, fellow classmates, or even members of other clubs. The Manager of Student Engagement can help put out promotions and recruitment posts when needed.

  • If your club leader graduated and nobody within the club is willing to take on that responsibility, email saengage@sl.on.ca for additional guidance and resources.

  • Don’t worry, you do NOT have to spend your own money on club activities, SWAG, prizes, or any other club related events! There is funding available for clubs to request that will provide them with the opportunity to financially support club-related expenses. Clubs can fill out a Budget Request on their URSLC portal page. If there are any questions about this process, email saengage@sl.on.ca

  • If you go to our clubs page and select “View Policies”, our clubs policies document will be a great resource for you to review throughout your journey as a club leader and should help answer a lot of questions that you may have when starting out. If you need additional guidance, resources, or have questions, you can always reach out to saengage@sl.on.ca for more information.

  • If you are ever having issues with inappropriate behaviour conducted by a member of your club and aren’t sure how to handle it, you can always reach out to saengage@sl.on.ca for assistance.

Copy Centre

  • The Student Association front desk will be happy to help you. You can stop by during our hours of operation or email at copycentre@sl.on.ca

  • You can upload your file to the Upload tool or email your file to copycentre@sl.on.ca. You will be notified when your document is ready to be picked up. 

  • The copy centre offers colour printing, black and white printing, poster printing, lamination and document binding. 

  • In the Student Association on the second floor.

  • Yes, anyone student or community member can access the Copy Centre during the hours of operation.

  • No, not at this time. We accept cash or debit.

  • You can usually wait for it or if it’s a busy day, it would be done within 1-2 hours. We will send you an email when it’s ready for pick up.

Food Pantry

  • You have to apply on our website (https://saslc.ca/foodpantry). You need to fill out the intake form, please be sure to be as specific as possible and answer all necessary fields to ensure a quick turnaround time. Once the form is complete, allow for 1-3 business days while your form is being assessed.

  • Any fee-paying student that is currently enrolled in St. Lawrence College program. 

  • You can apply for the SNAK program a maximum of twice a month OR four times an academic year, if you resubmit an intake form and continue to meet the standardized criteria. 

  • You can collect your card at the Student Association front desk. Please bring the approval email and your student card.

  • Unfortunately, not. The person that was approved for the card must come claim the card.

  • If you have not heard anything back in 1-3 business days, please come to the Student Association front desk or contact Ashley Goodwins via email at agoodwins@sl.on.ca.

  • Free hot breakfast in partnership with St. Larry’s Pub, Pop-up Fresh Food Markets, food education classes for students in emergent need.

Health Plan

  • Although we can answer general questions, the student insurance plan is not RUN by the College. The Student Association, along with College administration, ensure that enrollment information for eligible students is sent to the insurance company.

  • You can contact WeSpeakStudent at https://wespeakstudent.com/home/68-st-lawrence-college usingthe live chat, via email athelp@aclstudentbenefits.com or even remove call them at 1-800-315-1108. You will need to provide them with proof of existing Insurance coverage to be eligible to opt out of the Student Insurance Plan. 

  • Yes, for an additional fee. Coverage is available for health (prescription drugs) and AD&D. You must complete the family application form on www.wespeakstudent.com by the end of the first month of your coverage period. Payment instructions are given on the application form.

    • Certificate/Student ID number: The letter “I” followed by your SLC student number. (EX: “I1234567). When submitting a claim, ensure that the ID number has an “I” and “00” prior to your student ID (EX: “I001234567)

    • Insurance takes a few days to upload when you are a new student; your claim is valid from the first day of the term. 

    • Keep hold of all of your receipts and claims are submitted on the receipts are within the coverage period.  

    1. What is covered 

    • Students are automatically enrolled in is the Balanced Plan, which covers prescriptions, dental, and extended health. If this is not the plan you wish to be enrolled in, this adjustment must be made on the wespeakstudents website.

    1. Opting out:  

    • NOTE – You cannot opt out of the student health insurance plan unless you have alternative coverage. When opting out you must provide proof of alternative insurance.  

    • Contact wespeakstudents and use the live chat, email or phone (1-800-315-1108

    • Students who start in September, have until the end of the month to opt out; Students with a January start have until the end of January; Students with a May start have until the end of May.  

    • You can only opt out of the insurance plan at the start of the semester.

    • OHIP 

    • OHIP offers a wide range of standard health carefree of charge, as the costs for these services are covered by provincial taxes. You will need to carry an OHIP card, which is issued by the provincial government. This card shows you are eligible to receive free health care in the province. 

    • OHIP covers the following: 

    • IMPORTANT – Opting out of health insurance due to OHIP coverage is not enough for individuals. If individuals are opting out of the health insurance plan, there will no coverage provided for prescription drugs, dental or vision expenses. 

    1. ADDIDENTAL DEATH AND DISMEMBERSHIP: 

    • This portion of the health insurance plan cannot be opted out of. If students choose to opt out of the student health insurance plan, they are still required to pay this portion of the health insurance fee. 

Locker Rentals

  • All locker rentals are available at the Student Association front desk on the 2nd Floor on a first come, first serve basis. Payment can be made via Cash or Debit only. 

  • Locker prices are currently $75 for two semesters (September to April), $40 per Semester (4 months) plus a $10 lock deposit, which will be refunded via Debit only upon the return of the lock at the end of the rental period. There will also be a 365 day rental (1 year) offered for $120 plus a $10 deposit.

  • Students are encouraged to remove their items and return their locks to the SA Front Desk at the end of their rental period, at which time their $10 deposit will be returned to them. Any remaining items that are left in lockers will be collected by the SA staff during the summer clean-out period. The items will be collected, and an email will be sent to the student to the email they provided when renting their locker to notify them and make arrangements for them to pick up their items. The items will be stored for one month, and at that point, if a student has not picked up the items and no contact has been made the items will be donated to and/or disposed of by the SA.

  • Absolutely. Just visit the Student Association front desk.

  • Yes, you can. Just visit the Student Association front desk and they can help you with that.

SLC Transit Pass

  • Your bus pass will now be your student card. Just tap the card upon entrance to the bus and you can access Kingston transit.  

  • Without your student card, you are unable to access Kingston transit for 24 hours. You must apply for a new card through URSLC, you will be able to access your bus pass once you have received your new student card.  

  • Bus pass stickers are no longer active as of September 1st. Valid student cards will be switched to the tap system as of that date. 

  • No, you must tap your student card to ride Kingston transit.

  • Your card is inactive, you cannot board the bus and must visit student services.

Student Discounts

  • Yes! There are plenty of local businesses that offer discounts to our students with a valid card. These vary from food, to services, to excursions, and retail locations. The list of discounts offered can be found on the SA Website at: https://saslc.ca/services.

Student Funding

  • Please fill in a funding request form found on the SA website and read the guidelines to learn about the steps.

  • The deadline for requests is March 30th at 4 pm. Any requests past the deadline will not be considered for the current fiscal year.

Student Jobs

  • Typically we hire students in March and July.

  • All job opportunities are announced on our social media first.

  • Jobs at the Student Association range from Front Desk clerk to student managers who run events, clubs, and funding portfolios. The Student Association also employs a student President who is hired by the board of directors (7 students who are elected to represent the Student Association).

Student Spaces

  • We have a variety of spaces such as The Muis Lounge, Davies Hall, Diana Drury Games Room and 16 Boardrooms across campus. They all serve different functions, and you can find out more about each of them as saslc.ca.
